The ACT Opposition has used debate on this year’s Budget to again push for the exordium of random drug testing for Canberra motorists.

Opposition spokesman Steve Pratt has told the Legislative Assembly recent cases have highlighted the dangers of motorists driving while drug-affected.

Mr Pratt has called on the Government to introduce the roadside tests immediately.

"But again we see a Government that is far more concerned about the rights of those who might by ways and means of chance have illegal drugs in their regularity versus the rights of another 90 per cent of law abiding Canberrans who do not drive with drugs in their a whole but are at risk," he said.

The ACT Government says there are weighty issues to address before roadside testing can be brought in.

Territory and Municipal Services Minister John Hargreaves told the Assembly such a proposal requires extensive consultation before any trial is conducted.

He says the Government has already released a discussion paper to estimate community views.

"There are a number of significant issues that need to exist addressed before introducing random roadside unsalable article testing in the ACT," he said.

"Efficiency of the testing devices, whilst much improved in late years, would have to be confirmed.

"And the implementation of a mix with drugs testing program would need to be consistent by full of heart rights and criminal law principles."

The Budget is proper to be passed by the Assembly tonight.

The Opposition has promised to closely examine the Budget distinct parts and says it wants a thorough debate on the appropriation toy before it is passed.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says the Budget will be passed even if it means members have to sit past midnight.

"There are complications if it doesn’t and we will actually not leave the Assembly til it’session passed," he said.

"So I guess that’s the tension or at in the smallest degree the discipline that the Government and every member of the Assembly needs to be aware of."

The Opposition says it is important to examine whether the Government be possible to actually deliver on its promises to build new infrastructure.
